Inherent in all humans is an innate curiosity and desire for knowledge. Human learning is a multifaceted and intricate process, distinct in several ways from the learning observed in other creatures and machines. Learning serves as a compass guiding us to comprehend and adapt to our ever-evolving surroundings and circumstances. It enriches our repository of knowledge, homes our skills, and deepens our understanding, thus empowering us to become more capable, well-rounded, and competent individuals. Furthermore, it fosters our ability to connect with others, engage in effective collaboration, share ideas, and ultimately conquer life's myriad challenges and setbacks. Learning is a lifelong expedition that keeps our minds active and curious, continually nurturing our personal growth and fulfilment. It bestows us the essential tools to navigate the intricacies of the world, make meaningful contributions to society, and lead gratifying lives.
In contrast, the notions of learning and education are intrinsically entwined. Einstein once said, "Learning is not the product of schooling but the lifelong attempt to acquire it. "The primary objective of education is to nurture substantial and pragmatic learning experiences in individuals, empowering them to acquire knowledge, cultivate skills, and make meaningful contributions to society. Education has served as an integral facet of human societies across the globe, with various individuals and societies contributing to the evolution of educational systems and their guiding principles throughout history. For example, Confucius (551–479 BCE) underscored the cultivation of virtuous character, the pivotal role of the family in education, and the promotion of social harmony. Plato and Aristotle (427-322 BCE) deliberated on the philosophy of education, while Comenius (1592–1670) advocated for using illustrated textbooks and a systematic approach to teaching. Rousseau (1712–1778) emphasised the significance of personalised and experiential learning, and Maria Montessori (1870–1952) expounded upon the natural progression of a child's development. During the early 20th century, educational learning theories such as behaviourism, cognitive, constructivism, humanism, and connectivism brought new insight into the methods of learning and education.
"Elementary School" is a performative installation that illuminates an archival aspect of the educational journey. It invites contemplation on the pedagogical dimensions of teaching and the principles of playfulness and democracy as vehicles for acquiring diverse knowledge.
