Without poetry, there is no song. Our voice students can be thankful to Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano. With Des Knaben Wunderhorn, these two poets undoubtedly brought together the most influential collection of lyrics for German songs. Following contemporary philological norms, the pair aimed for 'the spirit' of authenticity. But for their fellow musicians, the collection quickly became a much-loved and especially inexhaustible literary reserve of song texts. Gustav Mahler also took advantage of this wealth of material. His cycle of the same name was arranged for small ensemble by the Greek composer, Dimitris Andrikopoulos, an arrangement that does credit to the original orchestral palette. Piet Van Bockstal ably conducts the whole.
