Following our annual tradition, students of both voice and instruments have again joined forces to devote themselves to an opera project. Where past years have focussed on the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism, this time we move on to the map of the 20th century. With Igor Stravinsky, the past is perhaps never far away. His one-act Mavra was dedicated to his countryman, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and reflects back to a romance from a century before. The process of composing Le Rossignol took several years, and influences can be recognized from late-Romantic Russia, for instance Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky's teacher. It is Modernism, of course, but with a whiff of stylistic nostalgia.
