Our voice students, in association with the School of Arts (KASK) & Royal Conservatory's Open House Day, will be delving into a multifaceted American repertoire as the final segment of their ensemble project. The influential American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, ‘I embrace the common, I explore and sit at the feet of the familiar, the low.’ A practical, concrete feeling for everyday tangible reality forms a prevalent theme in American artistic life. From the experimental music of Charles Ives, sprinkled with hymns, to Tin Pan Alley, to poignant spirituals. This last genre evolved in the grim context of southern cotton plantations, where Afro-American slaves softened their hard labour with song.
