s u r p l a c e is curated by Edwin Carels and running until October 10, 2021 at Zwarte Zaal. The exhibition takes place in the context of the EOS-project B-magic, which focuses on the history and aftereffect of the magic lantern as a mass medium. B-magic researchers present their research topic and are paired with artists from the exhibition s u r p l a c e to start an informal dialogue.
Scientists and entertainers, teachers and priests, political movements and organisations: they all used projected visual narratives to inform, entertain, educate and mobilize audiences of up to more than a thousand people per occasion. The lantern was the first visual mass medium to contest the printed word as a primary mode of information and instruction. All layers of society, both literate and illiterate, received visual information about nature, religion, science, new technologies and foreign countries.

Tim Bruggeman will present his book De harde naakte werkelijkheid (second edition, 2021) at KASKcinema lobby
Flanders, the early 1990s. The number of fatal victims of road traffic accidents connected to nightlife is at its peak. Emergency physician Dr. Beaucourt prepares a slideshow and tours secondary schools on a mission. He seeks to highlight the risks and shows harrowing, brutal images of victims. These images become part of the collective memory of a generation. This publication revisits that presentation. The only original elements here are the photos, which are depicted in slide format. The order of each image is determined by the chronology of events connected to a crash. The numerical code under each image refers to the location where it was found in the original archive.
The book was published by infinitif in coproduction with B-magic and KASK School of Arts.
