ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

In a world that is changing at lightning speed, no one can predict the future. We are anticipating things and situations that are only just emerging, still being developed. In our professional Digital Design & Development bachelor programme, Devine for short, we train students to find their way in the digital world of tomorrow.

As a Deviner, you will use design, development and researching skills to shape online experiences, for today and for the future. You will become a fully-fledged member of the creative sector: a world-wide, digital, innovative subculture that sets the direction.

The Deviner is passionate about that ever-changing connected world. As a digital creator, you investigate how services or products can be improved. A Deviner brings renewal through innovations that make life more agreeable, calmer, simpler, or perhaps more exciting. The user’s experience is always at the heart of it all, and forms the basis for decisions made during the design and development process. An exploratory and creative attitude is essential. Problem-solving abilities are central, and here, digital technology is a means to an end. In this context, design is not only about graphics: it is a way of thinking in which solutions are conceived, researched, developed and communicated.

The Devine programme includes classical lectures, practical classes and intensive integration projects. The three pillars of the programme – UX research, Design and Development – come together during these integration projects. Throughout the three years of study, these projects become increasingly real, challenging and complex. In the second year, for example, you will take part in an international exchange to the Netherlands where you will work out a challenging project together with students from the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. In your final year, in multidisciplinary projects, you work on such socially relevant themes as mobility, unemployment, immigration, and so on. You select a specialization and become an expert in UX research, design or development. You refine your Deviner skills and, for your bachelor thesis project, you work together with students from the various specializations. Your studies will be rounded off with an internship, in which you work for three months in one of the national or international top companies in the creative digital sector.

In this sector, Devine is the reference point for top talent. On graduating, you will immediately start working as an experience designer, front-end developer, interaction designer, motion designer, full stack developer, mobile developer, or simply a Deviner. Because of this unique profile, the demand for Deviners is high, making job security a fact. Every day, our alumni shape our digital lives, as they work within all the public, non-profit and commercial sectors. Deviners investigate the ‘wicked problems’ of health, mobility, energy, welfare, climate, education, etc., and work on smart digital solutions that add value for the organizations and people involved. The solutions they develop contribute to a sustainable society for both our own and future generations.

The Devine programme is followed at the Buda Campus of Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen, or Howest, in Courtrai.

Digital Design and Development has been an elective track of the Multimedia & Communication Technology programme at Howest for the last ten years. In 2019, it became a fully-fledged bachelor programme at KASK & Conservatorium.
