Art and countercultures in the 1980s. The Beginning of Today.
A series of lectures organised by L’Internationale and KASK.
In political, economic, countercultural and artistic terms, the multiple origins of the contemporary moment are located in the 1980s. In this series of public lectures the European 1980s will be explored through the work of artists active in that period. Thereby the political, economic and social conditions specific to the different European regions are taken in to account in order to grasp the focus of the regional countercultures and artistic movements of that decade.

The lectures are organised by the museum confederation L’Internationale, a current partner of KASK in the five-year programme “The Uses of Art — The Legacy of 1848 and 1989”. (http://www.internationaleonline.org). This series of lectures is a spin off of the seminar ‘”1980s - Situating The Multiple Origins of the Contemporary (Art) in Today’s Europe”. The seminar draws from the exhibitions and events that form the programme “The Uses of Art — The Legacy of 1848 and 1989” and will make use of the new founded publishing platform L’Internationale Online, which is hosted by KASK.

Nav Haq, curator at M HKA, Antwerpen

Nav Haq is curator at M HKA, Antwerpen and member of the editorial board at L’Internationale Online. Haq has organised numerous solo exhibitions with artists such as Hassan Khan, Cosima von Bonin, Imogen Stidworthy, Kerry James Marshall and Shilpa Gupta. In 2014 he co-curated the group exhibition ‘”Don't You Know Who I Am? Art After Identity Politics” at MuHKA, and exhibitions of works by Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin and Otobong Nkanga in 2015.

His lecture will focus on his curatorial work at M HKA, and more specifically on the forthcoming exhibition “Energy Flash. The Rave Movement” at M HKA, that will look at rave culture of 1980s and early 1990s as a highly politicised phenomenon, considering it through the four key notions of 'autonomy', 'civil liberty', 'technology' and 'creativity'.
