In the arid landscape of Maharashtra in India, where the sun beats down mercilessly and debts fall like dark shadows across the fields, the young widow Sanjivani is looking for a way forward. Her husband, a farmer, chose to end his life when his financial debts became unpayable. Left behind with children to raise and a community that does not want to see her grieve, she balances between grief and survival. Her path crosses that of other women in a support group for widows who refuse to bow to the fate that has been dealt to them.
In Marching in the Dark, director Kinshuk Surjan captures the fragile resilience of women who remain invisible on the margins of society. In balanced and observant images, he depicts the struggle of Sanjivani, who moves between tradition and change. With harrowing honesty, the story unfolds as both a sobering testimony and a political protest. In her quest for self-determination, Sanjivani's story unfolds as a cry for empowerment and solidarity. Marching in the Dark not only shows the agricultural crisis in rural India, but also the healing power of community and collective struggle.
The film will be followed by a Q&A with director Kinshuk Surjan.
