02.10.25, 20:30, Rye Lane (2023)

Boy meets girl, it's a tried-and-tested formula that many romantic comedies – ad nauseam – are based on. Every once in a while, however, a breath of fresh air blows through the genre. Rye Lane is a vibrant, colorful, and lively pop song of a film that reenergizes the British romcom. When Yas and Dom bump into each other in the gender-neutral toilet of a museum, sparks immediately fly. The two experience a magical day in South London. Strolling past the food stalls of Rye Lane Market, they share their relationship traumas and hatch a plan: to break into Yas's ex's house to retrieve her favorite record (A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory).

No heart is safe from melting in this charming debut film by Raine Allen-Miller. The chemistry between newcomers David Johnson and Vivian Oparah is palpable as the film races like a jet ski on the Thames through a series of hilarious highlights. With nods to classics such as Notting Hill (1999) and Love Actually (2003), Rye Lane builds on the past in a way that, after a long absence, incorporates Afro-European experiences into the genre.

The screening will be followed by karaoke in the cinema.
