Billy Wilder is considered one of the most versatile directors of the Golden Age of Hollywood. With Double Indemnity (1944) he proved himself the king of film noir, and with Sunset Boulevard he created his own legacy in film history. But it was with Some Like It Hot (1950) that he charmed audiences with his perfectly executed combination of hilarity and suspense. Joe and Jerry have to flee after they witness a murder. They decide to go into hiding by temporarily living incognito as women and joining a ladies' orchestra that is travelling to Florida. Here they meet the charming Sugar Kane, the singer of the band — the eternally iconic Marilyn Monroe. Both friends fall for her and what follows is nothing but complication after complication. They become embroiled in a fight for her affection, but also a fight for their lives.

Some Like It Hot was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning the award for ‘Best Costume Design’ in a black-and-white film. Orry-Kelly's costumes created a seamless fusion between the fashion of the Roaring Twenties and the theatricality of Hollywood. Think of the beaded dress Marilyn wears when she sings ‘I wanna be loved by you’ — a scene that is engraved in the collective memory.

This film will be introduced by fashion history lecturer Maude Bass-Krueger.
