Craft ⇄ Algorithm
What remains of craftsmanship when an algorithm can generate an image in four seconds?
This question was at the heart of Craft ⇄ Algorithm, an U!REKA exchange between Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI) and KASK & Conservatorium.
Rather than simply discussing the topic, we made it tangible.
The process moved from hand to language to AI — and back again. Participants folded paper and fabric, described their work in just five sentences, handed those descriptions to someone else to prompt an AI without seeing the original, and finally compared the AI-generated image with the initial handmade piece.
What gets lost in translation? And what unexpectedly emerges?
This workshop invited students and staff to reflect on authorship, materiality, interpretation, and the shifting relationship between craft and artificial intelligence through direct experimentation.
Special thanks to Wim De Bruycker and Langendorff for making this happen.
