Samegrelo, north-western Georgia. Sandwiched between the Black Sea and the Abkhazian border, farmer Soso has decided to start a blueberry farm. Through the “Plant the Future” programme, the government provides subsidies to agricultural projects in the border region. The aim is to breathe new life into a region that has long been ravaged by conflict and geopolitical unrest. Soso and his family seize their chance for what should be a new chapter. However, their fresh start quickly takes on a bitter aftertaste. While the war in Ukraine rages and the ghosts of the past reappear, they try to find their way through the administrative and financial complexities of their enterprise.
In this tender documentary, filmmaker Elena Mikaberidze follows the daily life and fortunes of the family for two years. Mikaberidze highlights the love and resilience shown by Soso, his wife Nino and their two children in the face of adversity. Despite everything, light-heartedness and joie de vivre prevail in this ode to human perseverance and parental love.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Elena Mikaberidze.
