25.03.25, 20:30, Il Gattopardo (1963)
No expense, effort or star cast was spared by Luchino Visconti, as on the grandest possible scale the Italian master filmmaker realised his film epic Il Gattopardo. Burt Lancaster plays the lead role as aged prince Don Fabrizio di Salina who sees his culture and fortune in Sicily crumbling in the face of a new generation, namely his own cousin Tancredi (Alain Delon) and his ravishing fiancée Angelica (Claudia Cardinale).
Luchino Visconti, who was also of noble birth himself, portrayed in Il Gattopardo - based on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel of the same name - melancholy and opulence in the tumultuous years of the Italian Risorgimento around 1860: the period of Italy's unification when the aristocracy lost its grip and the middle classes rebelled fiercely. Visconti was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for, among other things, the fabulous photography. Atmospheric technicolour ball scenes set to music by Nino Rota made the film a timeless classic. Feast your eyes and ears, benvenuti a tutti!
