It's Oscar season! KASKcinema presents a selection of short films by Oscar-nominated artists Johan Grimonprez and Nicolas Keppens. In preparation for a sleepless Oscar Night, we dive into the two makers' early oeuvre.
Former student and teacher Nicolas Keppens has a chance to win the Oscar for Animated Short Film with Beautiful Men (2023). For this special occasion, we dive into KASK & Conservatorium history and screen his graduation work Superstars (2013). Then we go on safari trip in Wildebeest (2017), in which Keppens unleashes his unique animation style on a safari that derails.
Johan Grimonprez is also in the spotlight with his Oscar nomination for Soundtrack to a Coup d'État (2024). We explore his critical documentary outlook through five short films that span the globe: from Brussels (Comment filmer Molenbeek? and Smell the Flowers While You Can), to New Guinea (Kobarweng or Where is Your Helicopter), to the international arms trade (What I Will), to ending up with Palestine poetry in the hyper-relevant Two Travellers to a River (2018).
