13.11.25, 20:30, The Annihilation of Fish (1999)
After 25 years in the depths of film history, this hidden gem is finally getting its Belgian premiere. Director Charles Burnett made a name for himself in the 1970s with masterpieces such as Killer of Sheep (1978) and To Sleep with Anger (1990). When he released this film in 1999, it was immediately shelved by the distributor after one scathing review. What followed was a years-long odyssey to give the film an audience after all.
With his characteristic blend of humanity and tragicomic touches, as well as a cast of legendary actors (James Earl Jones, Lynn Redgrave and Margot Kidder), Burnett tells the story of an eccentric elderly couple. These two lost souls join forces to combat loneliness and try to rediscover meaning and purpose in their later years.
A hidden gem in the oeuvre of one of America's greatest filmmakers. Big fan Martin Scorsese helped make this restoration possible through his Film Foundation.
