“Forgetting is part of the memories.” After fifteen years of absence, Farah returns to Tripoli, where her father Mustapha — widower, poet and eternal patriarch — still lives. Their shared flat is steeped in mourning and misunderstandings, but also in words that once connected them. In We Are Inside, Farah tries to reconnect with her father Mustapha — and with her country through his poetry club, populated by elderly gentlemen. While outside the protests of 2019 erupt, inside there is stagnation. Only her father's poetry offers a possible bridge.
Director Farah Kassem cuts her story in a tight 4:3 format and with surgical intimacy, full of heavy emotions that dance lightly through the scenes. The result is a bittersweet portrait of an ideological, emotional and linguistic generation gap. What does it mean to return to a place where you never really belonged? We Are Inside whispers the answer—between the lines, in the silences, and in the laboured sentences of a father who had the last word for too long.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Farah Kassem.
