During Film Fest Gent, two short film competitions and a retrospective underline the importance and quality of the shorter format. The International Short Film Jury selects winners in both the International Short Film Competition and the Competition for Belgian Student Shorts

Competition for Belgian Student Shorts

The Competition for Belgian Student Shorts is exclusively held for students from accredited film schools in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. The International Short Film Jury rewards the best entry with the Award for Best Belgian Student Short, a prize worth €5.000 - facilitated by Amplo, HR partner for the creative sector.

But you also get to pick a winner. You decide who wins the Audience Award (Powered by THE PACK) and gets to go home with a post-production budget of €6.500.

Selected films by (graduate) film and animation film students

• Mon Dewulf, Far from Beyrouth
• Sebald Van der Waal, Nieuwe Stad (New City)
• Aaron Denolf, Housekeeper
• Ieva Lība Ratniece, Wandering dot and the blank square page universe

All four films will be screened on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Kinepolis Ghent, amongst shorts by students from other schools.
