Step by step
The artistic and investigative process is central. Your attitude as an artist is of paramount importance. The technical skills you master serve to express yourself in your most personal way. During the programme, you will have the opportunity to discover what animation can mean for your own artistic practice.
Drawing and 2D animation are still the gateway to learning to animate. The teaching team encourages you every moment to use the medium to search for your own universe, your own reality. Not only animation is covered, interaction with the other courses at KASK & Conservatorium is also encouraged: there is room in the programme for interaction with other disciplines such as theatre, performance or visual arts.
An in-depth exploration of animation
The study programme combines practical workshops with general and practice-supporting theory subjects. You thus explore the building blocks of movement qualities, styling, narrative structures and musicality. On top of that common technical foundation, you will also master techniques specifically needed and functioning in your creative process. During each first semester, the emphasis is on knowledge transfer and skills. In the second semester, you take time to work this into personal projects.
A good dozen practical teachers guide you in the undergraduate and graduate studio, each of them with their own artistic vision and technical expertise. You find your own way in that rich offering with tenacity, an open learning attitude and boundless curiosity. In the master's programme, you focus fully on your personal artistic research both in practice and in the form of a thesis. You take responsibility for that course, supported by two mentors. The master's seminars provide a theoretical framework in the form of discussion platforms with students from different disciplines. Within the studio, there is frequent consultation with fellow students to follow and discuss each other's working process. In the master you continue to test and feed your own practice in relation to the outside world through an internship. The master project – which may also take forms other than the medium of film – is assessed by an external jury.
Animation with character
Typical of our graduates is their very diverse profile. They are strong, exceptional individuals, creators who dare to step outside their medium, dare to take risks and have a strong opinion on the content of each project. Our alumni work in film, animation, theatre, arts, art education and research. Their projects end up at international film festivals and exhibitions. Recently, for instance, Sine Özbilge (trailer for Film Fest, M HKA collection), graphic novelist Ben Gijsemans and Nicolas Keppens with his multi-award-winning short film Easter Eggs were in the spotlight. The career of multi-talented Jonas Geirnaert (Woestijnvis etc.) also started at KASK in 2004 with his graduation film Flatlife, with which he immediately scored in Cannes.

english master
In addition to a Dutch-language master, this study path also has a fully English-language counterpart. Every academic year, dozens of foreign students start in the English master's at KASK & Conservatorium.
There are no differences in curricula, competencies, learning outcomes or organization between the English-language programmes and their Dutch-language counterparts. Don’t hesitate to contact the study and learning track counsellors with your questions.
