3D is dead, long live 3D! Whereas ten years ago 3D was still heralded as the future of the film medium, by now many a film exhibitor has already put away the plastic glasses. Four-eyed dimension junkies need not grieve, however, because far away from the multiplexes, 3D continues to tickle the imagination. With 3D Extravaganza, KASKcinema and Art Cinema OFFoff invite you to take a leap of faith. We present a sampling of how form innovators have continued to embrace this technology beyond blockbusters and desperate gimmicks.
From the 3D remake of the Lumière brothers' L'arrivée d'un Train (1886) and UFOs in ChromaDepth to a spatial approach to the vulva via medical 3D photography, no corner of the eye is safe. It leads us further to Horta's three-dimensional garden maze in Barcelona and mysterious hothouses at dawn, to Hollywood cypresses waving trance-inducing back and forth. Alongside work by other contemporary, red-green 3D contenders such as Blake Williams and Johann Lurf, Rainer Kohlberger dismantles stereo vision into a duel between brain and outside world. Afterwards, the pompous sea battles from Avatar 2 (2022) seem like nothing more than a bad dream.
