28.05.25, 20:30, Aggro Dr1ft (2023)

For the last Weird Wednesday of the season, we close with the thermal glow of Aggro Dr1ft. Enfant terrible Harmony Korine argues that cinema is obsolete in the age of Twitch superstars. In his latest work, he explores the possibilities of image editing and infrared cinematography in his own unique way. The film follows the hellish journey of a hitman in Miami who finds himself in increasingly sinister situations. The plot is pure pulp, but make no mistake, classic Korine iconography such as sun-drenched gangster bosses and neon nightclubs are only the starting point for serious questions about a post-cinematic world.

With Aggro Dr1ft, Korine attempts – for the umpteenth time in a row – to create a new kind of cinema. While a bloody epic unfolds in a psychedelic landscape of colour, Korine is primarily interested in exploring the viewer's mind. The cognitive effects on which cinema is based are pushed to their limits here. With influences from gaming and livestream culture, the film is first and foremost a formal experiment that attempts to capture the language of a generation. Unbearable for some, the beginning of resolution for others, Aggro Dr1ft is, in any case, a trip like no other.

This screening will be introduced by audiovisual artist Michiel van Wambeke.
