27.10.24, 15:00, copyshop—, Reading the Room

You make a book. Wonderful. But where do you go from there? How do you navigate the landscape of large-scale print runs and unreachable distribution centers? It seems they need to notice you before the book becomes of value, but less is true. copyshop— aims to acquire and share knowledge on publishing and bookmaking and exchange experiences. By this, we attempt to support artists and writers against the assumption that gatekeepers of large printing houses have the fate of artist books in their hands. Reading the Room will consist of two conversations.

The first conversation takes place at KIOSK on October 27. We will evaluate the theme of art(ist) books through texts by Lucy Lippard, Ulises Carrión and so on, but also share experiences, rant, vent, share micro-anarchist publishing tips, etc. through collective reading between the guests.

The second will take place on the upcoming Ghent Art Book Fair accompanied by a publication formed from of Reading The Room. Together with lawyer Tobias Van Royen and Tijs Vastesaeger, as well as artists like Dominique De Groen and Marijke De Roover, we will explore notions of the 60s and 70s on artist books, what is necessary to create an artist book, and how best to protect (financially and juridically) the artist in the process.
