26.02.25, 20:30, Pelikan Blue (2023)

In 1990s Hungary, the world is finally within reach — at least, on paper. Travelling abroad is officially possible, but unaffordable for most young people. In Pelikan Blue, three friends decide to bend fate to their will by forging international train tickets. After all, what's the point of freedom if you can't enjoy it?

What begins as a simple escape from drab reality grows into an adventure that takes them not only past unfamiliar landscapes, but also along their own borders. In this animated-docu hybrid, director Mátyás Szabó sketches with melancholic charm and subtle absurdism a portrait of a generation in search of freedom, while the legacy of communism is still palpably present. Peppered with comic moments and the tragedy of being young in a changing world, Pelikan Blue is both an ode to the recklessness of youth and a reflection on the price of freedom — whether paid for with money or guts.

This screening will be preceded by Michiel Favoreel's short film De Kraaien Ruimen Op (2024).
