04.02.25, 20:30, The White Reindeer (1952)

Tonight there is no escape from the harsh winter months in which we find ourselves. Set in the icy Lapland of the 1950s, The White Reindeer evokes a timeless mythical atmosphere. This Finnish fable follows Pirita, a young woman, who feels lonely due to the absence of her husband Aslak. She seeks help from a shaman, but a dark ritual turns her into the white reindeer, an enchanted creature that attracts — and destroys — men.

Since its release in 1952, Erik Blomberg's hypnotic folk horror has lost none of its enchantment. Blomberg delivers a feminist inversion of werewolf mythology that was ahead of its time. The vast snowfields, captured in breathtaking black-and-white cinematography, are a perfect mirror for Pirita's inner conflicts. At a time when modern life is alienating, The White Reindeer remains a powerful reminder of the dark beauty of longing and the dangers of loneliness.
