From 1 September 2026, pianist, improviser, researcher and opinion maker Seppe Gebruers will take over the artistic and managerial leadership of MIRY Concert Hall in Ghent. He will set the artistic direction and further develop the public concert programme from 2027 onwards.

MIRY Concert Hall is a historic concert venue with distinctive acoustics and a long musical history. Its location in the heart of KASK & Conservatorium also offers unique opportunities for the future. Gebruers aims to further develop the venue as an open musical space where education, artistic research and the wider musical life come together. In this context, the space is not a neutral setting, but an active participant that helps shape how music sounds, is experienced and takes form.

Curiosity becomes the central guiding principle of the artistic direction. For Gebruers, all music becomes contemporary music the moment it is heard today. Early music does not reach us unchanged: we hear it alongside everything that has been created since then and from a radically altered sonic perspective. Ockeghem, Bach or Schumann can therefore sound just as new and unsettling today as Schönberg, Scelsi or Evan Parker. MIRY will therefore not allow itself to be constrained by genres, historical periods or a dichotomy between tradition and experimentation. Listening to the unknown with fresh ears, whilst learning to hear what seems familiar in a new light, forms the shared challenge for both musicians and audience.

Gebruers views his role explicitly as that of a curator. It is not a pre-conceived programme in which musicians subsequently fulfil a specific role: their artistic practice forms the starting point. Substantive dialogue helps determine what a concert might become and how it takes shape on stage. This creates space for the ideas and individuality of the invited artists, whilst the interaction with the venue, other musicians and the audience can also transform the concert.

Given its proximity to KASK & Conservatorium, Gebruers also wants to strengthen MIRY’s role as a bridge. Students, alumni and emerging artists are not presented in isolation from the wider music scene, but are connected with experienced artists and established figures. In this way, knowledge can flow in various directions: new generations are nourished by experience, whilst their questions and practices can also stimulate established artists and traditions.

This vision is closely aligned with Gebruers’ own artistic journey. As a pianist and improviser, he moves between free improvisation, jazz, experimental music and the established repertoire. Central to his practice and his doctoral thesis Playing with… is the act of playing as a relationship with what is present – an instrument, a space, a fellow musician, a tradition or a musical memory – and as an opportunity to transform that relationship. In Playing with Standards and Playing with The Beatles, he engages in a dialogue with melodies from the collective memory on two quarter-tone pianos. He has collaborated with musicians such as Andrew Cyrille, Paul Lovens, Evan Parker and Charlemagne Palestine; leads the improvisation collective Troika; and is involved as ‘Gangmaker Meerstemmigheid’ at Muziekcentrum De Bijloke, as well as writing opinion pieces in the debate on curatorship, the audience and responsibility.

Seppe Gebruers takes over the reins from Ruben De Gheselle, who has helped build up MIRY over the past ten years and secured it a firm place within the musical landscape. We would like to thank Ruben wholeheartedly for his commitment and the work he has done for MIRY.
