If there’s such a thing as a lonely language, it must be Basque. Linguists are still puzzled and can’t seem to track down any other family members. Musicologists are better off. Both Aita Donostia and Jesus Guridi, two Basques at heart, clearly combine a romantic tonal language with some musical peculiarities of the region. As part of a cultural exchange, their work is given a Flemish counterpart, albeit a bit more recent. In Mathias Coppens piano trio biting irony and ecstatic dances of grotesque joy alternate with voluptuous sound cascades and impudent lyricism.
