19.11.24, 20:30, Schone Handen (short films)
Next to the face and the eye, the hand is perhaps the most popular motif for closeups in cinema. For filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock, Jean-Luc Godard and Robert, the hand itself was such an engaging presence that it became a cornerstone of their cinematic language. As an art form that, as Béla Balázs once pointed out, is perfectly capable of responding to small gestures, cinema presents the hand as a privileged motif. In the process, the hand seems to acquire an autonomy and its own identity and character.
The selection offers an impressive choreography of hands by filmmakers, choreographers and artists. Some of the offerings: Hands (1960, 5‘) by Ed van der Elsken, Hand Movie (1966, 6’) by Yvonne Rainer, Hand Catching Lead (1968, 3‘) by Richard Serra and Francis Alys’ Paper, Scissors, Rock (2013, 3').
The films will be introduced by art science lecturer Steven Jacobs.
