Dirk Moelants studied musicology at the University of Ghent, where he worked as a researcher at IPEM. In 1995 he received a doctoral scholarship to work on the perception of rhythm and its use in contemporary music. He obtained a doctorate in musicology in 2002. In addition to these studies he followed viola da gamba with Sigiswald Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. There he obtained his Master's degree in 2001. Dirk Moelants is currently working as an assistant in the musicology department of Ghent University.

As a gambist he likes to look for new things, under performed old music as well as contemporary music (including various creations). He also tries to integrate the gamba into non-western music, especially music from the Middle East and Asia. Dirk Moelants regularly plays with various ensembles such as Olla Vogala, Zefiro Torna, Currende and Ardalus and has performed as a soloist throughout Europe and in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Morocco, where he collaborated with local musicians.
