19.02.25, 20:30, La Soupe aux Choux (1981)

Get ready for a unprecedentently breezy Weird Wednesday. This time we shove in front of you a turnip-and-coal-infused sci-fi behemoth in which the farting contest between two elderly drinking brothers attracts the interest of an alien. In terms of storyline, La Soupe aux Choux undoubtedly falls more easily digestible than the cabbage soup of the title, that is, if you do not suffer from an excessive form of civilisation. The more brushed-off viewer beware. Director Jean Girault's concoction can indeed be gut-wrenching: grotesque characters, ludicrous costumes, moronic slapstick... and all churned together by the ever-hysterical Louis de Funès.

And yet! Those who can look at it with a lighter perspective may discover, beneath all the silly tomfoolery, an endearing tale of ageing, alienation, forgiveness and letting go. Call it an ode to the second puberty of the third age, where — with all due respect — screw the whole mess. Planet Oxo, we're coming.

This film is introduced by soup chef Régis Dragonetti.
