23.11.23, 20:00, Peggy Ahwesh

Peggy Ahwesh is a Brooklyn based media artist whose work spans a variety of technologies and styles in an inquiry into feminism, cultural identity and genre. The discourses of film theory are applied to themes of gender subjectivity and social relations through improvised situations, found footage and low end technologies while turning the conventions of realism on end. Ahwesh came of age in the 1970s with S8 filmmaking, feminism and the punk underground in Pittsburgh.

Some of her notable works include "The Deadman" (1989), "Martina's Playhouse" (1989), "Strange Weather" (1993), and "Nocturne" (1998), among others. Her films often challenge traditional narrative structures and push the boundaries of cinematic expression, incorporating elements of found footage, collage, and surrealism.

Peggy Ahwesh's work has been exhibited at film festivals, galleries, and museums around the world, and she has received recognition and awards for her contributions to experimental cinema. Her films and artistic endeavors have had a significant influence on the world of independent and avant-garde filmmaking, particularly in the exploration of gender and sexuality.

In November 2023, Visite Festival highlights Peggy Ahwesh.
