Geert Dhondt enjoyed a versatile programme as a performing musician (bass clarinet & piano), music theorist (counterpoint & fugue) and musicologist (PhD) at the conservatories of Ghent and Rotterdam and at the universities of Ghent and Paris. He obtained a first prize in piano with Claude Coppens and specialised as a bass clarinettist at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he graduated cum laude as a performing musician with Henri Bok. In 2002, he completed a doctorate in art sciences with Prof Herman Sabbe (UGent).

A co-founder of the SPECTRA Ensemble, he has performed as bass clarinetist with this and several other (chamber music) groups, and as pianist-improviser with the Laterna Magica Galanthee Show in Europe and Latin America.

He created over a hundred compositions, whether or not written especially for him or for one of his ensembles by Flemish and foreign composers. He developed a range of artistic activities, and the promotion and performance of new music and the creation of opportunities for young artists run like a thread through them.

He is director of KADE in Deinze, sits on various committees and councils in and outside HOGENT and is chairman of Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen. In 2014, he wrote Accord Parfait, a book about Claude Coppens published by Lannoo.
