Hans Theys (born 1963) is a Belgian writer, art historian and exhibition maker. He holds a Master of Philosophy degree (1987, Free University of Brussels) and a Doctor of Arts degree (2012, University of Antwerp).
He has organized 68 exhibitions in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Italy and New York and published 80 books on the work of contemporary artists. He has also published hundreds of essays, interviews and reviews in catalogs and magazines at home and abroad.
His recent publications include monographs on Walter Swennen (2016 and 2021), Max Pinckers (2021) and Robbin Heyker (2022), a collection of forty interviews with artists (Knockando, 2019, 464 p.), a collection of 31 conversations with older people from the cultural world (Wonderland, 2022, 416 p.) and an anthology compiled by Laurence Petrone from his complete works (Weatherless, 2023, 304 p.).
In June 2023 a monumental monograph on the sculptor Joost Pauwaert appeared (168 p.) and in March 2024 the groundbreaking work State of Emergency (Max Pinckers et al., 448 p.), the design and editing of which came about in a collaboration with Hans Theys.
He is the author of two novels: De Genade (2021) and Blauwe Tomaten (2023).
