Pieter Nuytten (b. 1980) received his first bassoon lessons from Koen Coppé and studied bassoon at the conservatories of Antwerp, Cologne and Basel with Francis Pollet, Danny d'Haene (contrabassoon), Georg Klütsch and Sergio Azzolini.  

As a student, he played with the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra (Japan) and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester under Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink and Ivan Fischer, among others.   

After a trial as Associated Principal Bassoon with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Glasgow, Pieter became solo bassoonist with the orchestra of the Rouen Opera - Haute Normandie (Fr.) in 2004 and he has been with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under Valery Gergiev, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Lahav Shani respectively since 2007. As a solo bassoonist, he has been a guest of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Hilversum, the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, among others. During the 2014-2015 season, he was additionally Solo Bassoonist with the Rundfunksinfonieorchester Berlin olv Marek Janowski.

Pieter is particularly active in the field of chamber music. He has played a.o. with Igor Roma, Nicholas Daniel, Jonathan Kelly, Priya Mitchell, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Alfredo Perl, Natacha Kudritskaya and Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden. He has played at festivals in Osnabrück, Storioni Eindhoven, Nature et Musiques en Bauges (FR), Schiermonnikoog and Arbanasi (Bulgaria). He is a regular guest at Oxalys and the Collective and founding member of the ensemble Focus, the Residents and the Kölner Kammersolisten.   

Pieter made his debut as a soloist in Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in 2001. Since then he has played concertos and concertantes by Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Mozart, Weber, Strauss, Kalevi Aho and Peter Maxwell Davies. Several performances were recorded and broadcast on Radio Klara and NPO Radio 4.    

Pieter is principal instrument teacher in bassoon at the Conservatories of Rotterdam and Ghent, and has given master classes in Belgium, Lima, Buenos Aires, San Sebastian and Linz.
