Pietà
Fenomenologie van een creatieproces
In recent years Ludwig Vandevelde (b. 1957) has been working on a series of sculptures on the historical-religious theme of the "Pietà. This resulted in seven wooden sculptures that, with flawless technique, express an understated depiction of emptiness, loneliness, sadness, and mourning. In this book, the artist reflects on the process that led to this series of sculptures. He does so through a phenomenological description. In seven letters, he talks successively about writing as a method of thinking; the process of creation as an Argonaut's journey; the work of art as sacrifice; the "making" of sculpture as a meaning-generating process; the question of the ontological status of sculpture in comparison to the things around us.
