Art and education: inextricably linked
Quality in art education requires space for individuality. The programme focuses on authentic art education: education that connects with the student’s lived experience and with current professional art practice. Conscious pedagogical practice, self-reflection and an inquisitive attitude are at the forefront.
Teaching is more than just a complement to artistic practice. Through expression, experimentation and a passion for your own artistic discipline, you will learn, as an artist-educator, to inspire others and pass on a love for the subject.
Two programmes, one vision
Within our School of Arts, we offer two specialised educational master’s programmes that bring together the strengths of different disciplines:
- Educational Master’s Programme in Audiovisual and Visual Arts: For creators in fields such as film, animation, photography, graphic design, fashion, textiles and fine arts.
- Master’s in Education in Music and Performing Arts: For musicians, instrument makers and creators/performers in drama and the performing arts.
You will study in an interdisciplinary environment that challenges you to explore new contexts based on your own expertise, deepen your inquiring mindset and translate your artistic practice into a committed educational practice.
Your professional compass
During the programme, you will develop an integrated professional practice in which you will grow into multiple roles:
- Arts Educator – You will translate your artistic practice into inspiring and meaningful learning environments.
- Researcher – You will work critically, reflectively and inquisitively.
- Organiser – You will develop and implement arts education projects in educational and practical contexts.
- Communicator – You clearly convey your vision to diverse target groups.
- Collaborator – You collaborate across disciplinary and sectoral boundaries, in education and society.
Learning through practice
Practical experience forms the heart of the programme. You explore how the artistic and educational components relate to one another and develop your own pedagogical practice.
The programme combines supervised practical assignments with internships. You will undertake internships in part-time arts education, secondary education and adult education. In addition, you will be introduced to the wider field of arts education.
In this way, you will build up broad practical experience and develop into a pedagogically grounded artist capable of working in a variety of contexts.
Two study paths
You can follow the programme in two ways, depending on your prior qualifications:
- The abridged study path (60 credits): For those who already hold a Master’s degree in the arts and wish to specialise in the educational component within one year.
- The initial study path (120 credits): For students who, from the third year of their Bachelor’s degree onwards, wish to combine art and education in a two-year Master’s programme.
