30.01.25, 20:30, Maya Dhondt X Josephine Massarella

Swan song for the KASKcinema theme month is this special Re:Score evening in which we give Josephine Massarella's experimental short-film work a new musical twist. Known as one of Canadian art cinema's most cherished treasures, throughout the 1980s and 1990s Massarrella managed to make a series of dreamy and poetic film portraits where the relationship between man and landscape was always central. Invariably starting from an ecofeminist philosophy, she tried to establish parallels between lived physicality and the natural environment. Cinema thus becomes a utopian space where female desire is externalised.

Musician Maya Dhondt draws the unruly power of elements from four of Massarella's experimental films with seductive synth work. Green Dream (1994) is a lush ode to the goddess Artemis while One Woman Waiting (1984) leaves us sitting in a sandy plain at dusk. In 165708 (2017), single-frame photography stretches time into plastic matter, with the sea as a perpetual background. Finally, the snow-covered dream states of Night Stream (1996) complete this sensuous four-part work.

With live accompaniment by Maya Dhondt, classically trained pianist and producer. She intuitively creates fragmented music, mixing genres, sounds and languages into a postmodern mix of glitch-pop and contemporary piano.
