16.01.25, 20:30, Notes on Displacement (2022)
The news is full of images of overcrowded boats and sprawling tent camps, but a clear look at the emotional world of migrants is often lacking. In Notes on Displacement, director Khaled Jarrar paints a penetrating portrait of uprootedness and human endurance. The film follows the Palestinian Syrian family of Hala and her children on their long, uncertain journey to Europe, fleeing war and chaos. Their personal story unfolds against a backdrop of desolate landscapes, overcrowded camps and endless border crossings. Each frame breathes the physical and emotional burden of migration, caught between hope and despair.
Jarrar's camera observes with intimate precision, while remaining a silent witness whose limits are acknowledged. Notes on Displacement thus transcends the confines of the individual story and becomes a complex portrait of the media ecology within which the suffering of others is traded. It is a documentary that refuses to lapse into sentiment, yet touches deeply. A poetic and painful meditation on what it means to keep moving, even when there is no destination in sight.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Khaled Jarrar.
