Jozef Sercu obtained the master's degree in music writing, option music therapy (Lemmens Institute, Leuven) in 1996 and has since worked as a freelance music teacher with children and adults, composer and author of songs for children, performing artist (cabaret, world music and pop, music theatre and contemporary music) at home and abroad. He also works as a teacher of musical education (music, dance and drama) at the teacher training programme Bachelor Primary Education at VIVES, Campus Torhout. In Ghent he founded and directed the world choir Karibu for 7 years (1999 - 2006), in Bruges he founded and conducts Koor X, a choir that prioritises singing, conscious self-development and connection (2015).
In 2020, he also took the children's choir VIVO! under his wing. Besides the purely artistic and music education, he works as a music therapist and body-oriented therapist. He founded the non-profit organisation Het Poorthuis in 2019, an organisation dedicated to increasing support among young people, children and adults. In 2021, Musical Theatre BomBarDon, an artist collective under the aegis of Het Poorthuis asbl, was formed, where he unleashes his creativity as a creator and performing musician/actor.
