Each candidate puts together a preparatory dossier consisting of several parts (personal data, written motivation and portfolio). All texts of the dossier must be typed. This preparatory dossier is sent digitally to francis.ponseele@hogent.be.

Candidates who have little or no artistic work can also take part in the test.

  • A curriculum vitae listing past studies, artistic and other activities,...

written motivation

A written motivation regarding the choice of study and school (maximum 1 A4 sheet).

portfolio

The candidate puts together a folder with a representative selection of his personal work: musical instruments already built, overview of books consulted on musical instruments and musical instrument collections or museums visited, autonomous artistic work and school assignments (drawings, photographs, sketches, painted studies, photographs of sculptures or spatial work, graphic work, music or other creations,...)

The portfolio should give the committee insight into the candidate's broad creative ability, observation skills, knowledge and love of music and instruments. The student should ensure that the work can be viewed on digital media (example laptop,...) if necessary.

research essay

You will write a short essay on a specific topic concerning musical instruments. For this, you conduct a small research based on literature, online sources, museum collections, etc.. You will submit the essay digitally prior to the entrance examination. Information on the subject and length of the essay will follow by e-mail in the week before the test, after complete registration for the admission test.

This test is compulsory for everyone. The contents of this subtest can be consulted in full via the link below. The result for this test will be included in the overall result.

written test

This test is organised digitally and should be handed in along with the portfolio. More info will follow by e-mail after registration for the admission test. The candidate has to give a written answer to a general question about a current social, cultural and/or artistic issue.

The aim is to allow the examination committee to form a picture of the candidate's theoretical prior education, to gauge the ability to formulate an opinion, to develop a line of reasoning and to edit a short written text.

praktijkproef

The practical instrument making test (including motivational interview) lasts 1 to 2 days (depending on the number of candidates) and consists of five subtests.

listening test

Candidates will be guided by the committee members and receive the necessary instructions. They will be asked to perform various primary hand-working techniques.

portfolio

motivation interview

During this interview, the candidate talks about his backgrounds, expectations and motivations towards studying musical instrument making. It is expected that the candidate has thought about these matters in preparation for this interview and can clearly formulate their answers to the committee members. Furthermore, it is recommended that the student has also oriented theirself to some extent on the content of the subject, for instance by studying some literature on musical instruments beforehand, by visiting museums such as MIM (Brussels) and/or Vleeshuis (Antwerp), etc.

proclamation and feedback

Please note that locations and times are subject to change. Changes will be communicated on the spot.

On the last day of the session, there will be deliberations and proclamation including a feedback moment. During the proclamation, candidates will learn whether they have passed or failed. Candidates must be present at the proclamation. Immediately after the proclamation there will be an opportunity for feedback, at which third parties may also be present. Afterwards or by telephone, there will be no discussions on results obtained.
