Installation as a discipline
Installation occupies a prominent place in the visual arts. In an installation, all media can be used and the contradictions and possibilities of the environment are important. Within modernity, artists grew an interest in artistic practice as a kind of (temporary) entrepreneurship by setting up an adventurous space within a larger context. Their motives indicated a questioning of the object-based in art and also wanted to connect to a discourse on a specific space for art.
Site-specific
The installation is not necessarily a large-scale undertaking but rather a way of working that does not bind itself to any one medium and is sensitive to the relationship between image and environment. If anything, the artwork becomes 'site-specific'; the showplace of the artwork or the way the artist displays the work contributes to its meaning. Each artist gives their own interpretation to this notion of spatiality and 'site-specificity'. Moreover, this practice is at times connected to public space, as the artist does not necessarily keep his work within the confines of the studio or regular exhibition space.
Image, object, space
The trajectory installation reaches out to different media. A critical discourse on (moving) image, the performative, object and space form the starting point in the design of the installation. This means that visual means such as object, drawing, text, photo, moving image and the human body can be used in a possibly temporary, site-specific and spatial whole. Production and presentation often coincide in the installation. This encourages you as a student to regularly display your work inside and also outside the walls of the studio. The regular show moments give you the chance to test your vision and feedback on new developments and an individual course. Through individual guidance and group discussions, you sharpen those intentions and learn to deepen your insights and skills in developing the installation. The guidance emphasises critical ability in the handling and use of visual resources.
In the studio, you have a small workspace or study area at your disposal. The studio is further divided into several technical workshops (wood, metal, digital, etc.) and a central set-up area. A diverse team of teachers and guest professors will guide you through your artistic development. People who each bring various imagery, aspects and visions on installations from their own practice.
