New artistic play spaces
Media art focuses on technological experiences in our society. The emergence of new technologies and products changes our expressions and communication. How we learn, perceive and interact with the world. The artistic result does not have to be virtual, programmable or digital. We look for openings or contradictions between new and old media, virtual and physical, concept and matter, ... We do believe that technology can have an activating effect because those analogue, mechanical or digital tools offer new artistic play spaces. We also pay ample attention to video art, artists' film and sound art.
Knowledge and skills for your creative process
From the first undergraduate year, the emphasis is on conceptualisation and elaboration of individual themes. We encourage this through critical questioning, theoretical and practical thinking exercises and reflection. We follow up the steps of the creation process, driving your personal and artistic development. Dealing with and mastering current and older techniques and media is a second important element of the course. Initiations in photography, video, sound, web techniques and programming of interactive audiovisual and generative systems partly constitute the practice of the first undergraduate year. Thus, you acquire knowledge and skills in function of your creative process. The initiations are framed in an art-historical and social context.
Opportunities and deficits of technology
The issues of the use of technology within artistic processes, as well as the freedoms associated with it, are outlined and sharpened in the second and third undergraduate years. Within a framework of individual guidance, collective showcasing moments and group discussions on the placement of individual work within contemporary technology, general visual culture and art, you will develop your specific trajectory. The media art studio has specialised workspaces in a large studio. There are facilities for focused work with video editing, 3D, game design, VR, AI and sound. The studio houses two research labs: Formlab, for digital fabrication, and Laboratory, an experimental lab.
Media Art collaborates with KASKcinema, Art Cinema OFFOff, Courtisane, Cinematek, Auguste Orts, Vooruit, Netwerk, Kraak, Nerdlab, iMal,...
After your studies
Fine arts focuses on future artists who can start their own practice. Graduates can work in a wide range of fields. They have knowledge of a wide range of basic techniques in audiovisual and digital media. This will enable them to work in museums, as artists' assistants, in the performing arts and in specialised branches of the creative sector.
