As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, everyday life goes on. Faced with the absurdity of living in a state of siege, while also worrying about paying rent and groceries, Ukrainian artists question how to discuss their country's contemporary crisis. Great personal pain and geopolitical issues do not prevent them from fighting for a language to denounce the war. With this double screening of the documentary Rule of Two Walls and the virtual reality You Destroy. We Create. image makers and other artistic craftsmen claim their place amid the whirring of missiles.

In Rule of Two Walls, Ukrainian-American filmmaker David Gutnik travelled to the front to capture how fellow visual artists use their work as a way for personal processing of war trauma. Can art make a difference when images of human suffering become commonplace? And in what ways do stories offer an alternative to the surrounding horror? You Destroy. We Create. also incorporates this line of questioning into an engaging VR work where we are guided around the margins of the Ukrainian cultural scene. Here, art becomes a form of rebuilding and healing.
